The Final Frontier- Sky Lagoon

So sad to wake up to my last day, but what a day to end this trip. We slept in and took a taxi over to the Sky Lagoon. We found out late yesterday that the Blue Lagoon was closed because of the poor air quality from the erupting volcano Sundhnukagigar, and it looks like it’s still closed now. Sara had booked a day at Sky Lagoon for tomorrow after I leave but she was able to change it and add me to the reservation for 10am. She also did all the research and got the 7 step experience, which was absolutely amazing.

So we started in the main lagoon, with lava rock completely surrounding the pool on 3 sides and the fourth had an infinity edge towards the ocean. It was probably 40° outside and the lagoon was about 102° so there was mist everywhere. I could have stayed forever.

So to do the wellness ritual, you start with a cold plunge that was about 40°, which was definitely invigorating. It actually wasn’t bad, I ended up going in a couple more times.

Next is the sauna, which was a quiet room overlooking the ocean. Couldn’t take that for much longer than 5 minutes, but it was a lovely pore opener.

After that is a cold mist- so just mister showers that cool you off. Then on to the next step where you get a dish of salt scrub to put on… which was so good I bought 2 tubs of it. Step 6 is the steam room, which was so steamy I could hardly see. I never noticed this in a steam room, but they had cold handheld showers in the steam room, which was super refreshing.

The last step was one final shower, except we were compelled to go back into the lagoon… if I didn’t have a flight to catch I would have stayed forever.

Here’s the pic we never thought would actually be amazing!

But alas, I had to catch a ride to the airport from this super nice Polish expat who told me he came to Iceland from Warsaw for 2 weeks to visit a friend 10 years ago and met his now wife… and the rest is history! He loves the slower life in Iceland and is so happy to be out of the city.

Here’s a pic of me with 4 layers on bc I have no room in my luggage. And thank god I didn’t have to check a bag or I’d be sitting in a random hotel in Vancouver after missing my connection trying to find a flight to LA tomorrow… but hey if it was easy it wouldn’t be fun, right? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Can’t wait to check out the summer in Iceland, what a mystical place!

Love you to the moon dad- today is 8 years without you… but grateful for you every single day 💕🇮🇸
