The Final Frontier- Sky Lagoon

Image
So sad to wake up to my last day, but what a day to end this trip. We slept in and took a taxi over to the Sky Lagoon. We found out late yesterday that the Blue Lagoon was closed because of the poor air quality from the erupting volcano Sundhnukagigar, and it looks like it’s still closed now. Sara had booked a day at Sky Lagoon for tomorrow after I leave but she was able to change it and add me to the reservation for 10am. She also did all the research and got the 7 step experience, which was absolutely amazing. So we started in the main lagoon, with lava rock completely surrounding the pool on 3 sides and the fourth had an infinity edge towards the ocean. It was probably 40° outside and the lagoon was about 102° so there was mist everywhere. I could have stayed forever. So to do the wellness ritual, you start with a cold plunge that was about 40°, which was definitely invigorating. It actually wasn’t bad, I ended up going in a couple more times.  Next is the sauna, which was a qui...

Exploring the Golden Circle

Image
Well it was definitely difficult to wake up this morning at 7 after last nights excitement, but we had our tour of the Golden Circle this morning and it didn’t disappoint. Our driver today was Rebecca, an Italian national who left her job at a Michelin restaurant in Bologna after they wouldn’t let her take off 4 days to go to a wedding. She went on skyscanner and the cheapest place she could go was Iceland. She fell in love with the place and now is a tour guide of 2 years here and doesn’t miss Italy at all. She said it is way more expensive to live here but it sounds like tour guides generally make pretty good money. Most of them are independent contractors hired by the tour companies. Tourism has blown up since the volcano eruption and basically there are 300,000 people here and 2-4 million tourists (can’t remember if I already told you this), so I would think the tour guides are high in demand. An apartment to rent here in Reykjavik is the equivalent of about $2400 per month (and th...

The Quest for Aurora Borealis

So today’s view waking up was from the bubble- I woke up with the sun and somehow Sara slept right through until 9am. We set our alarm (chariots of fire) for 2am… went outside… nothing… 3:15am… went outside… nothing. Except then in the morning when I was looking at my photos I was like omg what is that? Gummi said it is common for you to see the lights better on your camera than in person. But I was clearly half asleep… a little anti-climactic though.  We headed back towards Reykjavik and stopped at a lovely bakery where we got some pastries and I learned a very important word- succuladi (this is without all the fancy Icelandic letters I don’t have on my keyboard). I am actually getting better at pronouncing words here but they are so long!  It was bittersweet to see Gummi go… it was such a great day yesterday and we miss him already. Today was a chill in Reykjavik day. We went shopping on the rainbow street… got some gifts and bought myself a few too. This amazing wool s...
